Object-oriented automation in STAR-CCM+ through Java: Reducing CFD latency in aero design evaluations with 500kB

Makani is working to make clean energy accessible for everyone by developing energy kites, a new type of wind turbine. CFD is an important tool in the aerodynamic analysis tool set for understanding and predicting aerodynamic loads and performance of the energy kite. This talk will focus on how a dynamic environment has facilitated the creation of an object-oriented general aerodynamic CFD tool allowing for repeatable and rapid prototype simulations. A general outline of the tool development, lessons learned, added benefits, and future challenges using this framework will be presented for discussion.
