Transient analysis of the Francis-99 hydroturbine

Simulation of the Francis-99 hydroturbine is presented with correlation to experimental data. The virtual model of the hydroturbine accurately models the unsteady nature of the flow-field at the best operating point (BEP), part load (PL) and high load (HL) conditions. Global predictions such as efficiency, net head and discharge correlate well with experiment. Additionally, local velocity profiles in the runner agree well with experimental PIV measurements. Vortex rope characteristics are discussed for each of the operating points. The transient operation from BEP to HL (load acceptance) and from BEP to PL (load reduction) is simulated by modeling the guide vane rotation. Transient machine response is analyzed and correlated with experimental data.
