Fixed-bed reactors (FBR) are commly used in the chemical process industry. For highly exothermic or endothermic reactions special arrangments of FBRs are applied, i.e., with small tube-to-pellet-diameter ratio (N). In this presentation, aspects of an algorithm-based approach are investigated. STAR-CCM+® is used to model spatially resolved FBRs with small N. This approach is tested against experimental data in terms of bed morphology, resulting velocities, heat transfer, and heterogeneous catalysis. Finally, the question is discussed whether CFD can be applied as a design tool for small N fixed-bed reactors now or in the future.
