Effects of meshing strategies on in-cylinder flows

The presentation shows the impact of different meshing strategies on the simulation of the in-cylinder flow structure of the Transparent Combustion Chamber (TCC) engine. Large Eddy Simulation of several consecutive engine cycles are compared to experimental measurements, and the impact of the adopted meshing trategy on both accuracy and computational efficiency is evaluated.

Piston bowl optimization using STAR-CD and HEEDS

A multi-objective optimization is carried out to drive bowl shape and injector optimization of a CI engine for automotive application.

Both full-load and part-load operations are simulatenously accounted for in the optimization loop in order to cover a reasonably broad range of engine operations.

Impact of wall heat transfer on engine behavior

The effect of thermal wall functions is discussed in terms of engine thermal balance, thermal state characterization and impact on engine performance. In particular, the newly implemented GruMo-UniMORE wall function is applied to improve the prediction of knock limit in SI engines and combustion behavior in CI engines.
