Modeling of in-cylinder flow using overset mesh

Overset mesh has gained popularity in modeling applications with complicated geometries due to its flexibility in handling arbitrary motion. This paper presents a study on application of overset mesh for in-cylinder flow using STAR-CCM+®. Different mesh strategies were investigated including trim, poly, and direct mesh. It was found that the results are similar from different mesh while ploy mesh overall produces more robust results than trim mesh.

Use of CFD to improve wastewater treatment plants

Pöyry is an international consulting and engineering company that serves clients globally in the energy and industrial sectors. Pöyry being a “connected company”, applies Computational Fluid Dynamics as a tool to solve complex engineering problems that tangent a broad spectrum of its engineering services worldwide. Current presentation is focused on waste water treatment plants and the way how various issues are analyzed and resolved using CFD.

Durability analysis of fouled EGR cooler

Cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is effective for the reduction of NOx raw emissions of internal combustion engines. The required cooler has to be designed to efficiently reduce the exhaust gas temperature by several hundred K. The hot exhaust gas on the one side and the coolant on the other side cause strong temperature gradients in the cooler. This effect leads to locally different thermal expansion. In combination with pressure differences between gas and coolant, high stresses are induced into the cooler material.
