Improving fan efficiency with design exploration

Turbomachinery forms an essential part of many mechanical equipment systems and accounts for a significant portion of global industrial energy usage. Not surprisingly then, engineers are constantly searching for innovative ways to increase the efficiency of these power transmission devices.

This presentation illustrates a new and completely automated workflow for discovering better turbomachinery designs faster through the combined use of three best-in-class engineering design & simulation software products: TURBOdesign 1 (TD1) STAR-CCM+ and HEEDS.

Specifically:

Numerical investigation of a non-Newtonian pump

In this work a reverse engineering (RE) procedure and a comparative CFD analysis using different software are presented. The three-dimensional flow in the semi-open impeller and volute of a centrifugal pump has been numerically simulated. This kind of impeller is less likely to clog with solid bodies (this is an important aspect in the case of slurry-processing) and for this reason is suitable for food, chemical and Oil & Gas industries. It is well known that the performance of a centrifugal pump drops when handling viscous fluids.
